Dog toys spend time in your dog’s mouth, on the floor and sometimes outdoors. Regular checks and appropriate cleaning help you spot wear before the next game. Start with the specific product's care instructions.
Inspect before play
- Are seams intact?
- Are there holes or thin, worn areas?
- Are protruding parts coming loose?
- Is stuffing, thread or other material escaping?
Take a damaged toy out of use even if most of it remains intact. Reinforced seams also need checking.
Do not assume machine washing is suitable
Follow the care instructions on the packaging or product page. Do not use a hot wash, tumble dryer or strong disinfectant unless the instructions specifically allow it. If you are unsure how to clean the toy, ask the seller.
If surface cleaning is allowed, remove dirt with a damp cloth and use only permitted cleaning products. Make sure no cleaning-product residue remains on the toy.
Dry thoroughly
The toy must be fully dry, including thicker parts, before reuse. Do not keep a wet toy in a closed bag. PuppyToys warns that colour may transfer when wet, so keep damp toys away from pale furniture and fabrics.
When to replace it
There is no fixed lifespan: wear depends on play style and frequency. Replace a toy if the fabric or seams are damaged, parts are coming loose, or you can no longer clean it properly following the care instructions.
Do not repair a damaged toy with tape, glue or other makeshift materials that your dog could chew off. Calmly exchange the damaged toy for an appropriate intact toy or treat.
If a part is missing
If you suspect your dog swallowed a part, contact your vet promptly and explain what may be missing. Do not wait for visible symptoms.
